Today, I’d want to discuss the shocking and unorthodox removal of two
Democratic state representatives, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, from the
Tennessee House of Representatives. The crime was to protest against mass shootings, gun violence and lack of control on Weapons sale.
Who are Justin Jones and Justin Pearson?
Two young, progressive, and courageous legislators who got elected in 2022
to represent parts of Nashville and Memphis, respectively. They actively
campaign for racial justice, health care, and environmental protection. They
are part of a group known as “the Tennessee three”, along with Gloria Johnson,
a former teacher from Knoxville who also serves in the House.

What did they do to deserve expulsion?
They stood up for their constituents and their principles. On
March 27, 2023, a horrific mass shooting took place at The Covenant School in
Nashville, killing six people, including three children, aged 9. The shooter
was a former student who had access to an assault rifle. The tragedy sparked
outrage and grief across the state and the nation, and many people demanded
action from the lawmakers to prevent such violence from happening again.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee passed a gun law in 2021 allowing people 21 and up
to carry loaded handguns in public, openly or concealed, without a permit.

On April 1, 2023, hundreds of protesters gathered at the state Capitol
to call for stricter gun control measures. They chanted “No action, no peace!”
and “Enough is enough!” Jones, Pearson, and Johnson, who walked to the front of
the House chamber to show their solidarity, joined them. Jones held a sign that
read “Protect kids, not guns”, while Pearson spoke through a megaphone about
his personal experience with gun violence. Johnson also addressed the crowd,
saying that she had lost a student to gun violence in the past.
How did the Republican majority react?
The furious Republicans threatened to expel the three Democrats for
their “disorderly behavior” and “dishonor” to the House. They invoked a 1796
statute that allows them to remove any member who “knowingly and intentionally
bring disorder and dishonor” to the House with a two-thirds majority vote. They
accused the three of staging an “insurrection” and disrupting the legislative
process.
On April 6, 2023, they followed through with their threat. They voted 72-25
to expel Jones and 69-26 to expel Pearson. Johnson narrowly escaped expulsion
by one vote. The votes were along party lines, with only one Republican voting
against expelling Jones. The Republicans claimed they were upholding the
dignity and decorum of the House, while the Democrats denounced the move as a
“historic act of partisan retaliation” and a violation of free speech and
democracy.
Over 70% of the elected representatives facilitated unsafe environments for you and your family.
Why does this matter?
This is significant because it shows how certain politicians act to stifle criticism and further their own agendas.
It proves how some people place a higher value on firearms and profits than
human life.
This disdain for human life is also racial, as it affects the poor Black and
Brown people more.
It shows how some individuals unfairly quash the challenge of new leaders
who stand for diversity and hope.
Just imagine the destruction and misery the greedy politicians must be
creating, by exporting the guns and violence all over the globe. The
strife across the Globe will eventually hit everyone in this global village.
You cannot expect to pet snakes in your backyard and think they will only
bite the neighbours.
What can we do about it?
Be vocal about your views on this subject.
Support the leaders and activists who agree with the idea of banning guns.
Australia ,UK and most other countries have banned assault guns long ago.
They care for their kids.
